Sign the Petition to Restore and Protect the Samuel de Champlain Monument in Orillia
A Canadian Hero to Remember
For more than a century, the Samuel de Champlain monument stood in Couchiching Park overlooking the shores of Lake Couchiching.
Today, it sits in storage.
Despite its historical significance and its place in Orillia's heritage, activists continue to oppose its return. The future of this important monument remains uncertain.
We believe the Champlain monument should be restored, protected, and returned to its rightful place.

WATCH: Why the Champlain Monument Matters
Who Was Samuel de Champlain?
Samuel de Champlain was one of the most important figures in Canadian history.
Known as the Father of New France, Champlain was an explorer, navigator, diplomat, soldier, entrepreneur, and founder.
In 1615, he travelled into the region that would eventually become Orillia during the first known European expedition into what is now Ontario.
Unlike many colonial figures elsewhere in the Americas, Champlain pursued alliances, diplomacy, trade, and cooperation with Indigenous peoples. He learned their customs, sought to understand their languages, and fought alongside his allies when called upon to do so.
His legacy helped shape the foundations of Canada and remains an important part of our shared national story.
The Petition
We, the undersigned, call upon the City of Orillia to:

Ensure the monument is permanently protected from vandalism and future removal.
Recognize the historical and cultural significance of the monument to the people of Orillia, Ontario, and Canada.
